Impersonation
Utility Shutoff Threat
Someone claims your power or water will be cut off within the hour unless you pay now.
How it works
A caller says they are from your electric, gas, or water company and your service will be shut off very soon for an unpaid bill. They demand immediate payment by gift card, prepaid card, or a payment app to stop the shutoff. Utility companies send written notices first and offer normal payment options, not gift cards.
Warning signs
- Threatens to cut off service within the hour
- Demands immediate payment to avoid shutoff
- Wants gift cards, prepaid cards, or a payment app
- Says a technician is on the way to disconnect
- Pressures you not to hang up
- No written notice ever arrived
The newer AI trick
Scammers can spoof the utility's real phone number and use AI voices to sound like a calm dispatcher, adding to the pressure.
What to do
- Hang up and call the number on your paper bill.
- Do not pay with gift cards or prepaid cards.
- Ask for the notice in writing.
- Check your account through the utility's official website.
If they are still on the line: Do not pay or confirm account details. Hang up and call the number printed on your real bill. Utilities give written notice before any shutoff.
