Tech Support Popup Scam
A scary popup or call says your computer is infected and you must call Microsoft or Apple now.
How it works
A full-screen popup, alarm sound, or call warns that your computer has a virus and gives a number to call for help. The person who answers claims to be from Microsoft or Apple and asks to connect to your computer remotely. Once connected, they steal information, install harmful software, or charge you for fake repairs. Real tech companies do not put a phone number in a warning popup.
Warning signs
- Popup with a loud alarm and a phone number to call
- Claims to be Microsoft, Apple, or your antivirus
- Wants remote access to your computer
- Says you must not turn off the computer
- Asks for payment in gift cards or by bank transfer
- Pressures you to stay on the line
The newer AI trick
AI can generate convincing fake support websites and chat agents, and scripts that sound like a real help desk.
What to do
- Do not call the number in the popup.
- Close the browser or restart the computer.
- Never give anyone remote access you did not seek out.
- If you already paid, call your bank right away.
If they are still on the line: Do not let anyone connect to your computer. Hang up. Real companies do not warn you this way.
